Tartans are widely recognized as part of the Scottish Heritage.
Today, specific colors and patterns are associated with specific clan names. In earlier times, certain colors and designs were considered more indicative of an area rather than a clan. However, these areas were frequently dominated by a single clan.
Evidence exists that tartan patterns in Scotland are as old as the 3rd century, but clan tartans were not named until the late 1800's.
There are more than 2500 known tartans.
